Folding Shoji Screens
Historically shoji folding screens originated in China. Types
of folding vary according to purpose of use. For instance, small
two panel
folding screens
were employed during tea ceremonies, while larger, golden - leaf
screens with up to eight folds served as backdrops for dancing.
In later times lightweight and flexible shoji folding screens,
floor screens, and room dividers were introduced in order to make
transportation easier. A lightweight but strong core was produced
with a wooden lattice of a stable wood covered with multiple layers
of rice paper handcrafted in a particular sequence and resembling
a "karibari" or Japanese drying screen.
